Phonsavan is the provincial capital of
Xieng Khouang Province and a convenient entry
point for visitors to the famous Plain of Jars, ancient stone jars scattered around
the area in three main sites.
What to do?
The town itself is nothing to do- though it does have a certain dusty, frontier-type
feel to it - but the jars are interesting, the surrounding area is beautiful and
the trip there is adventurous. Highlights of the trip are visits at three Jar Sites
and surrounded villages.
In the centre of town, there is a large market where you
can see the local people sell a lot of interesting things including eels, bats,
birds, huge rodents and even porcupines. It is a good place to mingle with the tribal
people of Laos and admire their costumes.
Travel Tips:
Since it is located over a thousand meters above sea level, Phonsavan can get quite
chilly at night, so warm clothing is advisable if you're coming during the winter
months (November to February).
